Card subject to change. There are times where WWE will do something that can leave fans incredibly confused about what they are seeing. That is not exactly surprising given how many things they have to throw at you at one point or another, but there is also the chance that WWE could make a change so things could wind up being a bit more logical. That might be the case again with a major story.

The big story coming out of this week’s SmackDown was Roman Reigns helping Adam Pearce become the new #1 contender to Reigns’ Universal Title at the Royal Rumble. That is not the kind of thing that was exactly expected as Pearce is not an active wrestler, having not had a match in six years and never having wrestled in WWE before. WWE might need to change gears a bit and now we know how they might do so.

According to Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE may be planning to have Kevin Owens swapped into the match in Pearce’s place. Owens was not seen on this week’s SmackDown after Reigns injured him last week by throwing him out of the stands and through a table on the floor. There is no word on when or how WWE would swap Owens into the role instead of Pearce.

Opinion: This makes sense on paper as Reigns vs. Pearce is not the kind of match that you would expect to see on pay per view, but at the same time, would you have expected to see Reigns defending the title against Jey Uso at back to back pay per views? Reigns has done some surprising things during his title reign and there is no guarantee that WWE won’t try something else a little different this time around.
