It keeps hanging on. One of the biggest running jokes about Vince McMahon is his history of failures outside of the wrestling business. At the top of the list is the XFL, which has managed to go into bankruptcy twice and did not make it to a second season in either of its incarnations. The second time saw the league still be available for someone else to pick up for the right price, and now someone has done just that.

In the history of wrestling, there has never been a bigger crossover star than the Rock, not better known as Dwayne Johnson. After one of the most successful wrestling careers of all time, Johnson moved on to Hollywood and became arguably the biggest box office star in the world. It is rare to see him do something that does not succeed, and now he might be able to do that again in a field he has been involved with before.

According to Sportico.com, Johnson and RedBird Capital have purchased the XFL for $15 million, with the two sides splitting the cost evenly between the two of them. There is no word on what this means for the future of the league and no television details or news about a new season were announced. The XFL completed five of its scheduled ten weeks before being shut down due to the Coronavirus.

The league has potential. Check out some of what happened in its second incarnation:

Opinion: I’m not overly wild on the idea of spring football but picking up a league that was airing on national television for $15 could be a complete steal. I can’t blame them for trying and if they get even a tiny TV contract, they probably make their money back. It’s a fairly low risk and if it turns out being the latest accomplishment Johnson can add to his resume, good for him.

Will the league work this time? Was it a good idea? Let us know in the comments below.
