To the surprise of nobody, The New Day retained their tag team titles on RAW, meaning they have now broken Demolition’s record for longest WWE Tag Team Championship reign. Despite tag team wrestling’s relatively low station in the WWE, the trio were the clear stars of the night Monday, competing in not one but two triple threat matches, including besting Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns and Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens in the main event. Afterwards, several WWE stars of past and present took to Twitter to congratulate Big E, Kofi Kingston, and Xavier Woods on their record-setting night.
While the fact of the matter is that The New Day holds the record because that’s the way the story was crafted, the guys do still deserve credit. They’ve gotten themselves over with the fans and put in the work, and also sold a ton of merchandise. It’s all this that could keep the belts on the team even though the record has been broken. While it would be nice to see the title change hands for a change of pace, it will be hard for a team to connect with the audience like The New Day has.
