1. CM Punk
There is no one who received more high profile wins over Cena than CM Punk. The source of the argument against Cena this time is Punk never did it clean and Cena was main eventing PPVs when Punk was the WWE Champion.
The fact is that John Cena didn’t beat Punk once for almost two years during the major run of Punk’s career. There’s no one that can say that for Cena’s entire career. Punk was elevated to superstardom and at one time, a level Cena had never reached with the WWE fans at Money in the Bank 2011.
The only legitimate argument against Cena not putting Punk over is Summerslam 2011 when Cena was pinned with his foot on the rope. That’s an example of WWE protecting Cena, but not because Cena didn’t want to put Punk over. That was because at the time, WWE was setting up Nash vs. Punk. Nash attacking Punk wouldn’t have made any sense. To be fair, attacking Punk didn’t either but that’s another issue isn’t it?
Editor’s Note: Admittedly, there have been situations where I’ve been upset because I felt that Cena shouldn’t win. Mark Henry at Money in the Bank 2013, Kevin Owens at Battleground 2015 and Wade Barrett is a big one. However; I’ve had so many conversation with other fans that think just because Cena didn’t put a guy over once, means that he never puts anyone over. It’s not a strong argument and it makes no sense when you really look at his body of work. Cena’s done plenty to help put guys over and that’s all he’s been doing in 2015.
