So that’s what’s in a name. At last Sunday’s Clash Of Champions event, the Miz unsuccessfully tried to win his ninth Intercontinental Title from Shinsuke Nakamura. The win would have tied the record for most reigns with Chris Jericho, the current reigning AEW World Champion. Those two things do not mesh together well and that became clear on Sunday.
According to Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE is not currently allowing its announcers to mention Jericho by name. During Clash Of Champions, Miz was mentioned as being one win away from tying the record but it was never mentioned whose record he would be tying. This would not be the first time that names or words are banned by WWE, which has a long history of deciding which words can or cannot be used.
Jericho has won the title several times himself. Check out one such win:
Opinion: This is one of those situations where I understand the rationale behind the move, I’m not sure how much good it’s going to do. Are a bunch of wrestling fans going to suddenly run over and watch the other show just because they hear Jericho’s name? It would seem to be more noticeable to not say one of the most famous names in wrestling but WWE has always been quirky in something like this.
Is WWE making sense here? Will Miz ever tie the record? Let us know in the comments below.
