You had to know this one was coming. On tonight’s episode of “Smackdown Live”, Dean Ambrose defeated AJ Styles to become #1 contender for the Smackdown World Title. While a title date hasn’t been announced, it’s unlikely for the match to be taking place at “Survivor Series 2016” as both Ambrose and Styles have been announced for the Smackdown Survivor Series team.

It wasn’t exactly a clean win for Ambrose as James Ellsworth got involved to distract Styles and cost him the match. Styles defeated Ambrose to win the title at “Backlash 2016” and successfully defended it against Ambrose and John Cena in a triple threat match at “No Mercy 2016”. This will be Ambrose’s first one on one title rematch.

Ambrose is as good of a challenger as Styles is going to have right now. The story might be running a little long but it’s not like “Smackdown Live” is flush with top level faces. Ellsworth has been a nice addition to the story and the matches between he and Styles were entertaining thanks to Ambrose’s involvement. This is the best possible option while another challenger is prepared.
