That’s a step forward at Super ShowDown. Over the last two years, WWE has run multiple events in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which have come with quite the series of controversies. There are several circumstances which have caused fans to not be pleased with the move, including but certainly not limited to Saudi Arabia’s treatment of women. That seems to be changing a bit though, at least where WWE is concerned.

During last October’s Crown Jewel event, Natalya and Lacey Evans had the first ever women’s wrestling match in the country’s history. The match was quite the surprise as it was the kind of thing that I never would have believed until I saw it happen. It was quite the moment and something that felt like an actual change for once. But what could WWE do next? We now have an answer to that question.

This week on SmackDown, Naomi defeated Carmella to become the new #1 contender to SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley, with her title shot coming next week at Super ShowDown in Saudi Arabia. The match will mark not only the first title match the country has ever seen, but also the first women’s match announced more than two days before the show takes place.

It’s a big deal. Check out the first match in the country, plus the setup for the second:

Opinion: This is something that feels like a huge deal and the more normal it becomes, the better things really are. What matters is making this something that doesn’t feel like it’s hard to believe and having a match announced in advanced on the show is a great sign. I know there are miles left to go, but it’s better to have a small step forward than sitting around waiting over and over again.
