It’s almost like he’s great at this. Promos are one of the great arts in wrestling as you have to be able to pick up a microphone and make the fans want to watch you do your job. It isn’t easy, and there have been some all time disasters throughout history. However, when you get hold of one with a truly great talker on the microphone, you can see some magic. That was the case earlier this month.
On the August 10 Monday Night raw, Ric Flair gave a passionate promo about how he waned to be with Randy Orton, who was casting him aside. Flair talked about how he isn’t a star anymore and is just Charlotte’s dad, but he wanted to celebrate Orton’s greatness with him. This led to Orton hitting Flair low and Punting him as well. It turns out that there was a different scene laid out in that night’s plans.
During an appearance on Inside The Ropes, Orton revealed that the original script for the show called for Flair to stay silent, with Orton attacking him as he left. Instead, Flair took the microphone and gave an off the cuff promo, talking about everything he had been through. The show had been taped in advance and the segment could have been redone, but WWE decided to leave it in.
This was a heck of a speech. Check out Orton’s interview, plus what Flair said on the show:
Opinion: This is what wrestlers are talking about when they say you have to go by feeling. You can have all the scripts and plans you want, but sometimes you need to say something that is right for the moment and Flair knew that. There would have been a good way to go with Flair not saying something, but the emotion that he poured into it worked very well and was a great moment indeed.
