What could have been. We are coming up on Clash Of Champions and that means things are going to be focused on a variety of championships for a long time to come. That makes for some interesting situations as champions are going to have at least one challenger. You never know who you could be seeing challenging for a title, though in this case we know who won’t be getting a shot.
The Raw Women’s Title seen was shaken up back in May when Becky Lynch, who had held the title for over a year, vacated the title due to her pregnancy. Asuka was named the new champion due to winning the Money in the Bank ladder match the night before. She has held the title since then and needs some new challengers, though one of them will not be facing off with the champ anytime soon.
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the original plan for Clash Of Champions called for Asuka to defend the title against Shayna Baszler. The match was changed due to Baszler and Nia Jax winning the Women’s Tag Team Titles at Payback. Instead of defending against Baszler, Asuka is likely to defend against Natalya instead. There is no word on who Jax and Baszler will defend against.
They have gone at it before. Check out Baszler vs. Asuka in a different place:
Opinion: This isn’t the biggest surprise as Baszler and Asuka had been teasing a setup for a few weeks. What we are likely to be getting does not seem to be the most thrilling replacement, but maybe we can see Baszler vs. Asuka down the line. Asuka needs some fresh challengers, and I’m not so sure how great Natalya is going to be in that spot. Maybe they can surprise me, but I’m not entirely convinced.
