As previously noted, the ‘Fastlane’ pay-per-view in March next year will see AJ Styles defending the WWE Championship in a five-way match against Randy Orton, Shinsuke Nakamura, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn.
Despite not being a lock, would seem that none of the challengers will be winning the Royal Rumble match in January as it wouldn’t make sense for them to be in a Championship match at the PPV between the ‘Royal Rumble’ and ‘WrestleMania 34.’
There has been speculation that John Cena could potentially win the Royal Rumble match and face Styles to reignite their feud with the idea being that Cena wants to break Ric Flair’s record as he has now reached the same amount of reigns as the “Nature Boy.”
Dave Meltzer explained in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Cena is in a “much bigger match than Styles,” indicating that while he isn’t sure who the opponent will be, he could only name The Undertaker, Batista, Goldberg or Hulk Hogan.
The Undertaker has reportedly retired, Hogan may not return to the company or compete due to his leaked racist rant and his back issues. This leaves potentially Batista or Goldberg, though “The Animal” did indicate he wanted to face Triple H upon a potential return.
It is expected that several angles for ‘WrestleMania 34’ matches will be shot at the 25th anniversary of ‘Raw’ which takes place on January 22, 2018. This special is scheduled to air from both the Barclays Center and the Manhattan Center in New York City with appearances from The Undertaker, Kevin Nash and Shawn Michaels, among others.
