In a piece of breaking news that has taken the MMA and professional wrestling world by storm, former WWE Superstar CM Punk has announced his intentions to sign with UFC.
UFC President Dana White confirmed the agreement with an Instagram post:
Wrestling Rumors reported earlier Punk, real name Phil Brooks, was expected to meet with White at the pay-per-view for potential discussions. Punk appeared at UFC 181 in Las Vegas, Nevada and announced he would be signing a multi-fight deal with the company.
He is expected to make his debut some time in 2015.
For the event, he used his real name with the “CM Punk” ring name as well, credited as a “former WWE Superstar.”
The former WWE Champion made headlines over the past two weeks by appearing on Colt Cabana’s “Art of Wrestling” podcast, revealing he was fired on his wedding day by WWE after he had initially walked out in January after the “Royal Rumble” pay-per-view. He later said Vince McMahon’s public apology on the WWE Network was no more than a stunt.
He also confirmed the signing in a Vine for UFC:
“I’m here to get my ass kicked or kick somebody’s ass,” Punk said on the UFC 181 broadcast. He also revealed he is likely to be a welterweight, although middleweight is far more likely.
Punk also said he won’t be stepping into the squared-circle again.
“My professional wrestling days are over,” he said. “This (UFC) is my new career, 100 percent.”
It is unknown at this time when he will make anymore appearances for the company, though it is well-known he has had desire to get involved with MMA in the past.
Editor’s Note
Wow. Good for Punk, and what a huge draw that will be for UFC. Now we need to get he and Brock in the same octagon…though it will never happen.
