We’ve been hearing rumbling about a new WWE women’s tournament, similar in style to the Cruiserweight Classic, for some time. But it seems those plans have hit a delay.

The original report had placed the women’s tournament early in the year–either January or March. But the recent announcement of a UK tournament has pushed those plans back.

According to this week’s Wrestling Observer (subscription required), the women’s tournament is now tentatively scheduled for a May start.

The UK tournament will broadcast live next weekend on the WWE Network, January 14th and 15th. US fans who want to catch the show as it happens should expect some weird hours.

WWE has recently signed a number of new women, who could have excellent debuts in a tournament of this type. The early rumors even brought some unlikely interest from a former Knockouts Champion.

The CWC was the best program WWE has put together in recent memory, and I can’t help but be excited for more tournaments in a similar vein. A women’s tournament also has the advantage of bringing in more desperately needed female talent to NXT. While the yellow brand is starting to see some potential stars in the likes of Liv Morgan and Billie Kay, nobody yet feels like a credible threat to Women’s Champion Asuka–or even the next hottest thing, Ember Moon.
