We’ve been waiting for some time to see where next year’s Royal Rumble would take place, and it seems that we’re heading to the Lone Star State for the battle royal.
Wrestling Observer News is reporting that the 2017 Royal Rumble will be held in San Antonio, Texas, and the announcement is expected to be made official next week.
This would put next year’s show at the 20th anniversary of the Royal Rumble held in San Antonio at the Alamodome, which drew a crowd of over 60,000, a record attendance for that event. Stone Cold Steve Austin won the titular match there.
It’s also the 10th anniversary of another San Antonio Rumble, this one held at the AT&T Center, in which the Undertaker emerged victorious.
With the recent roster split, the upcoming Rumble is expected to feature similar rules to previous brand split events, with 15 competitors each from Raw and Smackdown vying to compete for their brand’s title at Wrestlemania.
Rumors suggest that Finn Balor is expected to return in time for the Rumble, and he would be a favorite to challenge for the Universal Championship at WrestleMania.
The most recent Royal Rumble featured Roman Reigns defending his World Heavyweight Championship in the 30-man match. The title was claimed by Triple H. The main event also featured the WWE debut of current SmackDown champion AJ Styles.
