Becky Lynch was SmackDown’s number one female draft pick, soon becoming the brand’s inaugural Women’s Champion. Despite the brief injury-related delay of her first title defense against Alexa Bliss, it seems that she’s going to be one of the top players among WWE’s female superstars.
However, all is not as it seems. According to Bryan Alvarez and Tom Lawlor of Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE has little faith in the female superstar’s promo ability. Why? Kevin Dunn, WWE’s head of production, hates her accent.
The pun-loving Lass Kicker has been a fixture in WWE ever since her debut, with her underdog “Becky Balboa” persona endearing her to fans both hardcore and casual. Yet it seems her mic time is being limited because of her Irish accent.
You can take this one with a grain of salt, as Kevin Dunn has been a scapegoat among fans for years. But with as many disparate reports of petty reasons to put fan-favorite wrestlers down as have been reported over that time, it’s easy to assume there’s some truth to them.
It’s true, Becky’s accent is thicker than that of fellow Irish superstars like Finn Balor and Sheamus, but it hasn’t seemed to affect her popularity in front of a variety of audiences. If there’s any truth to the rumor, I hope somebody talks some sense into the production booth soon.
