Baron Corbin and Dolph Ziggler both challenged AJ Styles for the WWE Championship on last week’s SmackDown, and in the process ignited a rivalry of their own.
While neither Corbin nor Ziggler were successful in last week’s Triple Threat, they do have unfinished business. After all, that became a multi-man match when their one-on-one bout to determine #1 contender was rudely interrupted.
This week, Ziggler and Corbin go one-on-one to settle that dispute. With AJ Styles already set to defend the WWE Championship against Cena at the Royal Rumble, it doesn’t seem that this particular battle will have championship implications, but SmackDown does need a shakeup of the main event scene heading into WrestleMania season.
This is a particularly important match for Corbin, who turned a lot of heads with his performance last week. He’s on the verge of becoming WWE’s next great monster, but he’s been in that “almost, but not quite” position ever since winning the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal at last year’s WrestleMania. The Triple Threat might have been a breakout moment for the Lone Wolf, and another strong performance here will surely cement his position as a main event player for SmackDown.
This match joins a previously announced battle between the Miz and Dean Ambrose for the Intercontinental Championship on the next edition of SmackDown. It’s already looking like a stacked show to kick off the blue brand’s New Year.
