We’ve seen the first wave of the WWE’s Superstar Swap, and they certainly opened with a bang. RAW kicked off with both The Miz and Dean Ambrose popping up on the show without warning. The “without warning” part was perhaps not the best way to handle things. Personally, I was hoping for something more along the lines of seeing Kurt Angle and Daniel Bryan making trades and such. However, what’s done is done on that front. What does the move from Smackdown to RAW mean for the men who made the move?
For starters, there are the “smaller” names. Kalisto makes sense because he can wrestle cruiserweights. Rhyno and Heath Slater are just going to be cannon fodder, if they show up on TV at all. To think they were the inaugural Smackdown tag team champions. Apollo Crews isn’t going to do anything if he doesn’t start connecting with the audience. None of these guys seem primed to be a big deal on RAW, at least for now.
The Miz’s move feels like a mistake. He was killing it on Smackdown. The Miz is one of the best heels in the company now, but part of what made him so delightful was his feud with Bryan, and his appearances on Talking Smack. That’s over now. Seeing The Miz do his Bryan schtick on a show Bryan has nothing to do with doesn’t seem to make a ton of sense.
Ambrose’s move works if Kevin Owens makes the corresponding move to Smackdown. That way the US and Intercontinental titles just swap. Ambrose gets new guys to feud with. He can leave Baron Corbin behind him.
However, Bray Wyatt is likely to benefit the most from the move. I was happy when I saw him pop up to taunt Finn Balor. Admittedly, that was partially because I thought it meant we’d miss out on the “House of Horrors” match I imagine is going to be a disaster. His feud with Orton has been dull. Wyatt really needed a change of scenery, and a feud with Balor could work well for him. As long as there are no more bugs being projected on the mat, at least.
