After 11 months as a heel, Daniel Bryan appears to be returning to being a babyface. After revealing himself last November as “The Real Daniel Bryan,” even defeating AJ Styles to become WWE Champion, Bryan unsuccessfully defended the title against Kofi Kingston at WrestleMania 35.
Following WrestleMania, Bryan remained teaming with his ally, Erick Rowan, winning the SmackDown Tag Team Championship and retaining them for two months before losing to The New Day. For weeks leading to SummerSlam, there was major speculation as to who was behind trying to take out Roman Reigns. After many, even Reigns himself, believed it to be Bryan, it was later revealed to be Erick Rowan.
As a result of Rowan lying, Bryan abandoned their friendship, even slapping around Rowan. This caused Rowan to attack Bryan, officially ending their alliance.
Over the past few weeks, Bryan has came to the aid of Roman Reigns, even successfully tagging with him at Hell in a Cell against Erick Rowan and Luke Harper. Along with Bryan garnering cheers from the crowd again, this also revived the “Yes!” chants. Also Bryan has not officially started chanting with the crowd again, he has encouraged the chants when he is competing.
On a recent episode of Busted Open Radio, former World Heavyweight Champion Mark Henry shared his thoughts on whether Bryan should start chanting “Yes!” again with the crowd.
“You don’t want to see him be a puppet,” said Henry. “You don’t want to see him be coerced by the crowd into doing their bidding, but you wanna see… let them do what they want to do, let them be the ones that chant, but don’t let him milk it and do the ‘Yes!,’ ‘Yes!,’ and point to the sky.”
Henry added that Bryan can hold the fans doing the “Yes!” chants over Sami’s head, telling him that he cannot control what the crowd is doing. He also said that the “wrestling purists will judge him for being a puppet and being a sheep, and that’s not what you want from somebody like Daniel Bryan.”
Seemingly, it appears as if this angle is leading to an Intercontinental Championship feud between Daniel Bryan and Shinsuke Nakamura. Although Mark Henry feels like this could be leading to Bryan having a Stone Cold and CM Punk kind of persona, it does not appear that the WWE is going that route. Most likely, this is leading up to Bryan starting the “Yes!” chants again.
