So that’s what’s going on. One of the biggest stories of the summer was the potential in-ring return of Shawn Michaels at either the Saudi Arabia Crown Jewel event and possibly even beyond that. The return was long thought to be an impossibility but now seems to be closer to reality than a dream, though the details still need to be filled in. We now have an idea of what some of those details might be.

According to Mike Johnson of PWInsider Elite Audio, Michaels isn’t looking for another great classic because that’s already been done. Instead, Michaels is more going back to the ring for the sake of fulfilling what he’s agreed to do. He’s going to have a match or two and leave while making a lot of money. There is still no official confirmation that Michaels is getting back in the ring. Here are Johnson’s comments, with transcription courtesy of ringsidenews.com:

“I love Shawn Michaels’ work. I think the return cheapens the retirement which is a shame and I’m sure the match is going to be great and when it’s over no one’s going to care. if it were up to me I’d like to see him wrestle Daniel Bryan or AJ Styles and really have a classic match, but that’s not what Shawn is trying to do here.”

“Shawn is trying to fulfill his obligations. He’s not going into this looking to create the next great classic. He feels like he’s already scratched that itch. He feels like he’s sort of done with that time in his life and he’s gonna just be the guy who helps out the company that’s paying him a lot of money and continues to pay him a lot of money to appear.”

“I don’t think Shawn is going to be the talent that they go back to over and over. I think this is going to be a one-time thing and I think it’s because he realizes this is the only time that we can probably do this and get it done right and that’s why he’s doing it.”

Maybe it’s a bald thing.

Opinion: While I’m still not 100% convinced that Michaels is coming back and won’t believe it until the bell rings, I do like the sound of him getting to do this the way he wants to. Michaels is one of the best of all time and I can’t begrudge him for going after one more huge payday, the likes of which he has never seen before. Keeping it limited might help a lot though, as extending it past its expiration date could be a really bad idea.
