Lawler has earned it. There are some wrestlers who have been around for what feels like the better part of ever and that kind of longevity can help make them a legend. It is incredible to see someone getting out there and doing what they have done for so long while still being very good at what they do. In recent weeks, a wrestler reached a milestone that very few have accomplished.
Back in 1992, Jerry Lawler joined the WWF as part of the commentary team and has been there on and off ever since. There were several years where Lawler was one of the main voices of WWE, but there was more to it than that. Lawler has also wrestled for a very long time now, debuting all the way back in 1970. That is quite the milestone and he received some attention at a special event.
WWE has released a video looking at Lawler’s 50th Anniversary in wrestling event, which took place on September 26 in Jackson, Tennessee. The video includes comments from various wrestling legends including the Rock N Roll Express, Lex Luger, Jimmy Hart and Memphis wrestling broadcast Dave Brown. Lawler teamed with the Rock N Roll Express to defeat Doug Gilbert, Matt Riviera and Tommy Rich in a Thunderdome cage match.
This was a great moment. Check out Lawler’s big night:
Opinion: I know Lawler might not be the most popular these days but sweet goodness that is an amazing career. Jim Ross once asked Lawler when he was going to stop wrestling and Lawler gave him a simple answer: “when they stop booking me.” Lawler is still getting to appear on shows like this because people are willing to pay to see him and if he can still perform at a high level, good for him.
What do you think of Lawler? Will anyone else make it this far in wrestling? Let us know in the comments below.
