His opinion matters. While his wrestling company may not be quite the juggernaut it was at its peak, there is no denying that Vince McMahon is still the most powerful person in wrestling today. McMahon has been in charge of WWE for about forty years now and there is nothing to suggest that he will be letting go of that power until he is gone. That means he is still in full control, and that control was on display last week.
Last week’s SmackDown was a special Throwback edition, with the show being made to look like it had in previous days. There were also elements from different eras, even if SmackDown had yet to debut in those eras. Prior to the show, SmackDown broadcaster Pat McAfee shot a video of himself impersonating McMahon as he arrived at the building. The video did not air on the show, and it turns out that it was McMahon’s doing.
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, McMahon did not want the video to air on the television show as he felt that it was not funny. McMahon thought that the video was meant to be a parody of a parody, to the point where he did not think McAfee looked, sounded or acted like him. The clip was later posted on WWE’s YouTube page and there is nothing to suggest that there is any heat on McAfee.
It’s kind of an awesome video. Check out McAfee’s impression, and some of the best McMahon impressions and moments:
Opinion: The more I think about it, the less I like McMahon’s sense of humor. There are some things that he allows to make air which are so unfunny it is hard to fathom, while other times you do not get to see things like this, which was more harmless than anything else. McAfee’s impression was not perfect, but it isn’t like WWE has not aired far worse and less flattering portrayals of McMahon before.
