Well that’s a big one. Last year at the Royal Rumble, Ronda Rousey made her debut, eventually leading to an in-ring debut at the following WrestleMania 34. To say she hit the ground running is an understatement as she became one of the top stars in the promotion in the blink of an eye, having one very good match after another. She’s a shooting star, but things are about to change.
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Rousey may be finishing up with WWE after WrestleMania 35 in April. Rousey has made it clear that she wants to retire from competition to have children at some point, though it isn’t clear if that is why she is leaving. It should be noted that there is a chance Vince McMahon could pay her enough money to keep her around. At the moment, Rousey doesn’t have a match scheduled for WrestleMania but a triple threat match with Charlotte and Becky Lynch has been rumored.
It’s hard to believe it was a year ago. Check out Rousey’s Royal Rumble debut, which still works:
Opinion: While there’s always the chance that she’ll stick around, this would be a blow to WWE. Rousey has become a top star in the division and someone the company can point to as one of the mainstream athletes who came over to the company. At the same time though, she’s the kind of worker whose star power will erode over time as she’ll become the wrestler rather than the former mixed martial arts star. If she wants to leave then good for her, as her being happy is what matters most.
