I didn’t see this coming. This week’s episode of “Smackdown Live” was a heavily hyped show with a pair of major matches. The show’s main event saw Shinsuke Nakamura vs. John Cena for the #1 contendership to the Smackdown World Title but the secondary match was no slouch with AJ Styles defending the US Title against Kevin Owens. So how did the audience go?
John Cena vs. Shinsuke Nakamura: SmackDown LIVE, Aug. 1, 2017
According to Showbuzz Daily, the audience increased but not by the biggest margin. Last night’s show drew 2.569 million viewers, up 1.3% over last week’s show, which drew 2.535 million viewers. That’s the highest audience since the June 27 show and the second biggest since the Superstar Shakeup.
Opinion: I’m rather surprised by this as you would expect a pair of matches like this one to have been a much bigger draw. Nakamura vs. Cena alone should have been one of the biggest draws of the year but the numbers only barely went up. I’m not sure what that says, but it probably means worse for Nakamura, who hasn’t proving his drawing ability in America yet than it does against a proven draw like Cena.
