It was revealed earlier this year that Netflix would be producing a show based on the mid-80s female wrestling promotion, Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. Now it seems a wrestler well known in WWE, TNA, and the independent circuit will be joining the cast.
According to Deadline, Kia Stevens, best known for time in TNA as Awesome Kong, will join the cast along with Britt Baron, Jackie Tohn, Kimmy Gatewood, Rebekka Johnson, Kate Nash, and Sunita Mani. The show will star former Community cast member Alison Brie, and is executive produced by Jenji Kohan, creator of Netflix’s acclaimed Orange is the New Black series.
While Steven’s WWE run as Kharma was disappointingly short, her physical presence and dominating in-ring style made her appearances memorable, and her work in other promotions is excellent. Awesome Kong isn’t the first wrestler to join the show, as Chavo Guerrero Jr. is onboard behind the scenes as a wrestling coordinator, assisting the actors in basic ring training.
Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling was a promotion primarily known for a kitschy TV show that ran for four seasons in the late 1980s. The organization gained modern notoriety thanks to a recent documentary called GLOW: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling.
Netflix’s GLOW series is a comedy-drama drawing inspiration from the real-life organization. The show is set to run for 10 episodes.
