#7: “Pomp & Circumstance” – “Macho Man” Randy Savage
Oooooooh yeeah! One of the most influential and beloved performers of all time, “The Macho Man” Randy Savage, came out to the classical composition (that you probably walked to on your graduation day), “Pomp and Circumstance.” Savage has gone on record saying that he chose this song in honor of his idol, the legendary wrestler Gorgeous George, as it was the theme that he was introduced with. It has been reported that one of Savage’s last requests to his family before he passed away, was that whenever he died, he did NOT want “Pomp and Circumstance” to be played during any of the ceremonies. He felt it would take away from the song’s association with Gorgeous George and his legacy.
At the end of the day though, anyone that was a wrestling fan during the ’85-’95 era didn’t think of Gorgeous George when they heard “Pomp and Circumstance.” They thought of the Macho Man. They thought of Miss Elizabeth. They knew they when they heard that song played throughout the arena, that they were about to get one of the best wrestling matches of the night, because Macho Madness was about to enter the ring, and that meant that the sky was the limit! Dig it?!
