The reactions on Twitter were ones of shock, sadness and disappointment, as Owens finally turned on his best friend.
However, as I was watching the segment go down, only one thought went through my mind.
In my opinion, the segment in which Kevin Owens turned on Chris Jericho was done perfectly in every way possible.
Let’s look at the facts. We knew this split was coming; especially since it has been heavily rumored that the two would be facing each other at WrestleMania for a long time now.
But to me, the brilliance of this segment was all of the little touches that make both of these performers so good.
First off, was the turn being done using a new ‘list.’ One of the best parts about Jericho’s new schtick is putting people on “The List of Jericho.” To have the turn occur by using the most popular part of “Y2J’s” character is simply genius.
Secondly, Owens smashing Jericho’s head through a monitor was paying homage to when Y2J did it to Shawn Michaels in 2008.
Finally, Owens is so dang good at being someone you just want to punch in the face. In a good way.
Another question that we all need to ponder, is how does Triple H play into all of this? He spoke with Owens alone backstage before this segment happened.
I’ll write another piece about this later, but don’t be surprised to see Jericho cost Owens the Universal Championship at “Fastlane” against Goldberg. This could be the perfect set up for their match at WrestleMania.
But, in the meantime, let’s enjoy the greatness of a segment done by two consummate professionals at the highest level possible. Both Owens and Jericho continue to show why they are two of the best wrestlers in the world, and why they bring the best out of one another.
Drink it in, man.
