Smackdown has been in a bit of a tricky situation recently, as they’ve had to tell stories revolving around AJ Styles’ World Heavyweight Title without Styles being able to participate much, thanks to an ankle injury that he suffered at TLC. Fortunately, Styles’ mic work keeps him actively involved, and on the most recent Smackdown a fatal fourway match to decide the No. 1 contender kept things interesting. On the other hand, Styles’ injury means James Ellsworth’s title shot still lingers, for better or worse. While Styles’ match with the fatal fourway winner, Dolph Ziggler, is scheduled for the last Smackdown of 2016, it seems like that might be the next time Styles wrestles.

Styles has been removed from house shows scheduled this weekend, and in fact according to PWInsider Styles is no longer part of all live event advertising through December 26. This is certainly not encouraging, but it should be noted that Styles’ match with Ziggler is scheduled for December 27. This could just be WWE, and Styles, playing it safe, and making sure he can just keep healing until that match. Why risk him exacerbating his injury on a house show when Smackdown is hoping to end 2016 with a bang?
