Despite being one of the biggest attraction in WWE, former UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez was not drafted to Raw or SmackDown during the draft. Velasquez was among several surperstars who were not drafted.
Currently, Velasquez is in a heated rivalry with one of his UFC foes, Brock Lesnar and a match is now scheduled for he Crown Jewel WWE Network event.
It seems obvious that WWE wants to utilize Velasquez to the best of their ability, especially since he defeated Lesnar in UFC in 2010.
Since Velasquez was not drafted to either Raw or SmackDown, he is now considered a free agent, with the ability to go to either one of the brands.
WWE Status of Cain Velasquez Following Draft
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Velasquez is supposed to be with Mysterio through the end of October, setting up for his match against Brock Lesnar at Crown Jewel. In addition, WWE Creative probably do not want to address him as a regular until after the match with Brock Lesnar, and then they will figure out what to do with him next.
As of now, it looks like WWE wants to continue to use Velasquez as an attraction, and putting him in the mix with the WWE Draft could lessen his box office feel. Although Velasquez has very little in-ring experience as a pro wrestler, he has shown this year how serious he is by the training that he has undergone both at the WWE Performance Center and while competing for AAA.
Problem with Rey Mysterio’s Involvement in Feud
Another wrench in the mission to make Raw and SmackDown exclusive is that Rey Mysterio was drafted to Raw. As the mouthpiece of Velasquez, this means that he still would have some involvement on the blue brand, which already takes away the exclusivity of the draft.
Marc Raimondi of ESPN reported that Velasquez signed a “multi-year contract” with WWE, so fans will be seeing much more of him following his feud with Lesnar. To keep Mysterio with him, Velasquez may go over to the Raw brand, but that has yet to be confirmed.
