When WWE announced the brand extension draft last year, it was reported that the company was going to reach out to former superstars in an effort to fill both the Raw and SmackDown rosters. One of the names that they spoke with, and were actually going to bring in was Shelton Benjamin. However, the former IC Champ’s return was delayed due to a shoulder injury.
On Thursday’s Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer gave an update on Benjamin, saying that the man formerly known as the “Gold Standard” didn’t sign a contact with WWE over the summer, and that he’s unsure if they’re still interested in bringing him back when he recovers from his injury.
“He did not sign a contract. When he went through his medicals they found the shoulder separation and he had to get surgery. But they did not sign him to a contract. Will they sign him to a contract when he gets healthy? That I don’t know.”
Shortly after the new year, Benjamin gave an update on his health, saying that he’s still several months away from being able to do anything physical.
So, it looks like he won’t return as a surprise entrant in the Royal Rumble.

It’d be hard to come up with a reason why WWE wouldn’t be interested in bringing Benjamin back once he’s healthy, so they probably will sign him to a deal once he’s fully recovered.
