Rumors have been circulating for months that WWE would be running a women’s tournament similar to the CWC and UK shows, but Triple H just made things official.

In an interview with Fox Sports’ Wrestling Compadres podcast, the WWE COO confirmed the tournament for this year, saying it would likely take place in the summer.

Triple H said finding the appropriate time for the tournament has been difficult, which initial rumors of the program taking place in January or March can certainly attest to.

According to F4W Online’s transcript of the interview, the plan is for recruitment is similar to that for the the Cruiserweight Classic, where WWE will look worldwide for appropriate competitors. The tournament, in turn, will help to increase WWE’s talent pool as a whole.

He was also asked about intergender matches, and made it clear he wasn’t a fan. He characterized promotions making use of matches featuring men against women as smaller groups making use of shock entertainment value. I’m sure Lucha Underground fans will take umbrage at that assessment, but WWE is obviously a different beast. Triple H said he prefers women to stand out on their own athletic merits.

Are you excited for the upcoming tournament? This will be the third, and it seems more are planned for the future. Let us know what you think in the comments, or on Facebook!
