WWE’s Apex Predator is currently out with a knee injury. There’s a chance he’ll return to WWE programming before Summerslam. However, the expectation is Randy Orton is going to miss the biggest party of the summer. Nothing can be confirmed for a few more months, but we do have some new information about The Viper’s return to the ring.
According to PWInsider, Orton has visited WWE doctors in Birmingham, Alabama over the past few weeks. He’s been rehabbing and recovering from his knee surgery, but the report doesn’t specify when The Viper is to returning to the ring. The important thing is that he’s getting healthy again and working with some of the best doctors in the world.

Honestly, some time off isn’t the worst thing for someone in Orton’s position. He’s still wrestling at an extremely high level, but his momentum has taken a hit since the feud with Bray Wyatt ended after WrestleMania 33. For over a year, The Viper hasn’t been the focal point on SmackDown Live. However, that could change upon his return.
The most obvious things to do would be turning him heel, or moving him to Raw. The idea has been discussed among fans that Orton would serve the company best in the same role as John Cena. As a “free agent,” Randy could go to where it makes sense for him rather than floating along in the midard of SmackDown Live as the US Champion.
With someone who’s been wrestling as long and is as accomplished as Randy Orton, it’s a challenge to find new storylines and rivalries. There are plenty of options for him, but the WWE Universe always likes to see something or someone new. After a few months off, it could be an opportunity for Orton to return to WWE and do something new again.
