First for a dose of reality. At “Summerslam” 2016, Finn Balor became the WWE Universal Champion after defeating Seth Rollins in one of the best matches of the night.
However, Balor was injured during the match and suffered a severe shoulder injury. The expectation is he’ll be out of action for four to six months, but it’s possible it could be even longer than that.
That’s what actually happened, but it wasn’t always the plan for Finn Balor to become WWE’s first Universal Champion. In fact, there was an entirely different plan for Balor after he was drafted to Raw.
According to a report from Wrestlezone.com, the original plans for Finn Balor were for him to face Chris Jericho at “Summerslam,” but Vince McMahon changed his mind to push Balor as Raw’s Universal Champion.
After winning the title, the plan was for Balor to feud with Kevin Owens going into “Clash of Champions” later next month, which would have involved Jericho going into “Hell in a Cell” in October.
Obviously, plans have changed going forward. There is the possibility of Kevin Owens walking out of Raw next week as the new WWE Universal Champion, but he’s going to have to get through both Reigns and Rollins.
