The pieces are coming together. We are just over two months away from Summerslam 2021 and that means things are starting to come together. There are still several weeks to go before anything is put together, though WWE is already thinking about what they want to do. That includes what could be a huge match, and now WWE is trying their best to bring in a pretty big name.
According to both Jon Alba and WrestleVotes, WWE is hoping to have John Cena vs. Roman Reigns as the main event of Summerslam. According to Alba, Cena’s acting schedule cleans up in early July, which would allow him to be available for the match. There is no word on how the story would be set up or how WWE would be presenting the match. Cena’s last match took place at WrestleMania 36 against Bray Wyatt in a Firefly Fun House match. The match has NOT yet been made or confirmed and there is currently no guarantee that it will take place.
The story would involve Cena making his return to WWE for the first time in over a year to challenge Reigns, who will be just shy of a yeas Universal Champion. Reigns originally won the title on August 30, 2020 at Payback, having held the title ever since. Cena is also tied with Ric Flair for the most World Titles in history with sixteen reigns. This would not be the first time the two have met, as Reigns defeated Cena in a match at No Mercy 2017.
Was going to report this today even though I don't typically dabble into creative stuff, but @WrestleVotes beat me to the punch.
I can confirm, after speaking with multiple sources, Roman Reigns vs. John Cena is the targeted main event at this moment. #WWE #SummerSlam https://t.co/b13dh9MaEp

After speaking to a few sources on the topic, I’ve learned that WWE is 100% attempting to make SummerSlam this year’s WrestleMania. “All resources will be tapped into” is how it was explained to me. I do believe they want Reigns v Cena to headline. Not sure if they’ve decided.

Cena's schedule clears up in the beginning of July, which would allow him to return to #WWE in time for the return of fans. I believe it was @AndrewZarian who first mentioned this possibility a few weeks ago. #WWE

Cena and Reigns have worked before. Check out what WWE might be seeing again on the big stage:
Opinion: I think this is about as much of a dream match as you could get right now and WWE would be rather wise to make an effort to have the match take place. One of the biggest problems with Reigns being such a dominant champion is that it is almost impossible to have anyone be a realistic challenger. Cena is one of the few who could be on this level of a show, so it would make sense for WWE to go in this direction.
