At least they had a good reason. WWE has a lot of television to cover throughout the course of a week but Monday Night Raw is still the flagship event. SmackDown and NXT may move up a little bit here and there, but at the end of the day there is nothing they can do to get ahead permanently. That means WWE is going to have some ideas to keep the viewership up for Monday Night Raw. They did it again this week.
Every fall, Monday Night Raw takes a hit in the ratings because of Monday Night Football. That has been the case for decades now and is going to be the case as long as the two shows are on at the same time. This year was even worse due to the coverage of the Presidential election, which has gotten quite a bit of attention of its own. Now that the election is over, WWE has a plan of its own.
According to Wrestlingnews.co, WWE booked a pair of title matches for this week’s Monday Night Raw in order to get some more attention on the show. This week’s show will feature WWE Champion Randy Orton defending against Drew McIntyre and New Day defending the Raw Tag Team Titles against the Hurt Business. The current plan is to still have Orton face Roman Reigns at Survivor Series, as the McIntyre vs. Reigns showdown from SmackDown was designed to drum up interest in Orton’s title defense.
Both matches are sounding interesting. Check out how we got here:
Opinion: I can’t say I’m surprised here as the idea of a fast title change to shake up Survivor Series doesn’t seem like something WWE would be doing, at least not at the World Title level. This is an idea that makes sense, though I’m curious about what McIntyre is going to be able to do on Sunday because he’s kind of a major name to leave off one of the bigger pay per views.
What do you expect from the title matches? Will the matches boost the ratings? Let us know in the comments below.
