You don’t see that every day. The Undertaker has been around for a very long time and is the definition of a living legend. However, you almost never hear anything from the man behind the character. It’s one of the few rare things that you see in wrestling as he’s only given a handful of interviews over the years. We now have what might be the longest such interview though and it’s worth checking out.
A rare treat.
The Undertaker was recently interviewed by Pastor Ed Young of the Fellowship Church as part of a four week series which also features interviews with Sting, Ric Flair and Ted DiBiase. The interview is completely out of character and talks about his career as well as a -few of his thoughts on wrestling today. Despite the interviewer being a pastor, the interview is almost entirely about wrestling. Here are a few highlights, with transcription courtesy of 411mania.com:
On The Importance Of Characters
“It’s not about the moves — it really isn’t — it’s being able to evoke emotion in one facet or another. You have to either make people love you or you have to make people hate you.”
On Wrestlers Using So Many Moves Today
“A lot of times what happens with these young guys is they’re so athletic, they’re so gifted, they’ll do some kind of double crazy back flip off the top rope and land on somebody on the floor and then that’s what the audience takes away from it: ‘this guy does crazy stuff.’ Well, you can only see that so many times before you’re like ‘I’ve seen that. I need something new.’ And that’s the position they sometimes back themselves into. They have to keep upping the ante. And when you up the ante like that, then you increase your potential for injuries.”
And On His Character Allowing Him To Stick Around
“If you can’t bring that emotion out of your audience, you aren’t going to have them for long.”
Opinion: Undertaker is the holy grail of interviews as he’s only given a handful of out of character interviews in his entire career. With someone who has been around for the better part of thirty years and barely ever spoken, it’s fascinating to see what he thinks on wrestling. It’s not so much what he’s saying here as several wrestlers have said the same things before, but it’s UNDERTAKER saying them. That’s not something you get every day.
