John Cena still did it best. When John Cena became United States Champion in 2015, he set up the US Open Challenge, allowing anyone in (or outside of) the locker room a chance to come get a US Title shot. This became one of the best things on Monday Night Raw every week as you wanted to know who was going to come through that curtain this week. There are other versions of a similar idea though and while some of them are better than others, there’s always something to be seen there.
Opinion: Uh, I’m not sure WWE quite gets the idea of something being unique. Just having an open challenge for a different title doesn’t make it different. Some of these were certainly different though and that’s what makes them that much better. A gimmick like the Masterlock Challenge is always going to work because you can set up a feud or a rivalry while also getting someone, and their hold in particular, over in the process. It’s a case of “this one can do it” and that builds up anticipation. That’s worked for years and always will.
