Some people call this a Dusty Finish. The sign of the great referees is that you never notice he’s there. The referee is supposed to be out there to help make the match flow more efficiently without getting any attention on himself. That works most of the time, but there are some occasions where a few errors here and there are going to change the results of a match in a rather big way.

You can’t get them all.

7 times referees failed: WWE List This!

WWE has released a new video listing 7 Times WWE Referees Failed. These are instances where a referee made a bad call and went on to either apologize or reverse the decisions. There are moments on the list from recent times but dating back over twenty years. The name is a bit misleading though as one of the instances is from World Championship Wrestling instead of WWE.

Opinion: I can get behind this idea every now and then but it needs to be used sparingly. The referee can be a useful tool if done right, but if you use it too often, the fans are going to know it’s coming (like any other booking trope). Some of these things have been used for a great initial reaction though, and that’s entirely the point. The reaction when Chris Jericho beat Triple H is outstanding and proof that something like this can work. Just do it right and everything will be fine.
