A tradition like some others for AEW. The Women’s Revolution turned five years old this month and it has come a long way in that amount of time. American women’s wrestling has grown by leaps and bounds and it is almost impossible to imagine things being like they were in the years prior. The movement has spread outside of WWE as well and now the other major American company is considering an annual competition of their own.

Back in 2017, WWE presented the first Mae Young Classic, an all women’s wrestling tournament featuring thirty two participants from all over the world. The tournament took place again in 2018, though a third edition never came together. It was a successful idea though, and now another promotion is taking a shot at something similar, although with a bit of a twist.

This week on AEW Dynamite, a women’s tag team tournament was announced. According to Wrestling Observer Radio, AEW’s intention is to make the tournament an annual event, but it will depend on how the tournament does in the television ratings. There is no word on when the tournament will begin, though there will be eight teams and sixteen wrestlers total.

The tournament has some potential. Check out the AEW women’s division:

Opinion: I can go for this as it is the kind of thing that makes sense for everyone involved. AEW’s women’s division needs some extra names and the Mae Young Classic did wonders for WWE and NXT’s women’s rosters. AEW might as well try something similar as they can always use a hidden talent. You never know what you might find out there and it could help things out quite a bit in the future.

Will the tournament be a success? Who would you like to see included from outside AEW? Let us know in the comments below.
