It was a good idea eight months ago. Earlier this year, WWE introduced a pair of new titles in the form of the Women’s Tag Team Titles. The belts were instantly considered a little lower level as there were only a handful of female tag teams on the roster. However, there was a bit of a surprise as an announcement was made that the titles would be defended on Monday Night Raw, SmackDown and NXT, marking the first time that a main roster title would be regularly defended in NXT. Nothing ever came of it, though that is about to change.

This week on NXT, General Manager William Regal made an announcement about the Women’s Tag Team Titles coming to NXT. Later in the night, the team of Tegan Nox and Dakota Kai defeated Marina Shafir and Jessamyn Duke to become the new #1 contenders to the Women’s Tag Team Titles. They will receive a shot against champions the Kabuki Warriors, comprised of Asuka and Kairi Sane, both of whom will be making their returns to NXT for the title defense on next week’s show. This will be the first time the titles have been defended in NXT, though the champions have been on the show before.

The champs have their work cut out for them. Check out their thought after becoming #1 contenders:

Opinion: This is the kind of match that could go somewhere, even if the title change seems rather unlikely. Kai and Nox are both women who are easy to support so hopefully they can get enough of an underdog style match going to make the match work well. There isn’t much of a hope of a title change, though NXT knows how to make something like this work as well as possible. Just treat Asuka like the legend that she is and have the other two come close to beating her before falling at the finish line. That’s something that has worked before and it can work again here.

How do you see the match going? Who do you see leaving as champions? Let us know in the comments below.
