They used to be friends. A heel turn can be one of the most fascinating and important things to happen to a wrestler’s career. Sometimes it can be exactly what they need to set them up for the future as there can be a logical and well planned move for anyone involved. That might be the case again this week and it has already paid quite the dividend for someone involved.
Monday Night Raw has been dominated by Drew McIntyre for most of the last year as he is currently in his second reign as WWE Champion. McIntyre retained the title after being given his claymore sword by Sheamus, who has been McIntyre’s friend for years before they came to WWE. That sounds like a recipe for a big swerve and now that is exactly what happened.
Sheamus turned on McIntyre this week on Monday Night Raw due to wanting his a shot at McIntyre’s title. Later in the night, McIntyre agreed to face Sheamus in a title match at some unspecified point in the future. This will be their first televised singles match in WWE since a SmackDown match in January 2012. WWE’s next pay per view, Elimination Chamber, takes place on February 21.
Opinion: Works for me. This is a story that has been set up for weeks now as the two have been set up as best friends with a long history and now the title is coming between them. That’s as classic of a wrestling story as you can get and there is nothing wrong with it. Just go with what works and we should be in for a hard hitting power brawl. It might not have the most drama, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing.
