There’s a reason for that. We are less than five weeks away from WrestleMania 37 and that means everything that is taking place in WWE is going to get even more attention than usual. This includes every match and angle that takes place on television, with some of the matches being a bit bigger than most. We saw two of them in recent weeks and now we know why.
Last month at Elimination Chamber, the Miz cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase to defeat Drew McIntyre and become the WWE Champion for the second time in his career. This was quite the surprise as Miz is not exactly the most serious of a star these days. Miz would go on to drop the title to Bobby Lashley eight days later. That is a short title reign and there was a reason that was the case.
According to Wrestling Observer Radio, the idea behind the title switch was to get the title to Lashley. WWE’s ultimate plan is to have Lashley defend against McIntyre on the first night of WrestleMania, meaning that Miz was needed as a transitional champion. Miz was also chosen because whoever was the transitional champion would look weak, and Miz is not treated as a main eventer most of the time.
It was quite the turn around. Check out the title changes:
Opinion: I’m not sure how much of a surprise this is but that’s not the worst thing in the world. This is something that has been done for years in WWE and almost every other promotion and it still works. Miz is a former champion and had the Money in the Bank briefcase. Now WWE can do what they want and had a logical way to get there. It might not be the most popular, but it could have been a lot worse.
