There’s a reason for the thinking. Last Sunday, WWE aired the Royal Rumble to officially get us onto the Road to WrestleMania 36. The show was one of the biggest of the year and that means that we are moving forward to the absolute biggest of the year. The Royal Rumble is the start of several major storylines, but there was one story that might be setting up something bigger than the rest.
There were a lot of things taking place at the Royal Rumble and the biggest of them all came in the main event with Drew McIntyre eliminating WWE Champion Brock Lesnar. McIntyre went on to win the match and become the new #1 contender to Lesnar’s title. That’s quite the major upgrade and now we are in for a big match at WrestleMania 36. So why are we going in that direction?
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Vince McMahon decided to push McIntyre so hard because he wants the biggest main event possible for WrestleMania 36. The original plan called for McIntyre to eliminate Lesnar from the match but Roman Reigns would win the match itself. However, McMahon decided to push McIntyre even harder, with his match against Lesnar likely headlining WrestleMania.
McIntyre made his point clear. Check out what he set up on Monday Night Raw:
Opinion: This is the kind of thing that has been needed for a long time to come. McIntyre is the kind of person that WWE has needed to try out in the main event for years now. After so long of trying the same people in the main event scene over and over, it is time to try someone fresh. Maybe McIntyre can be the big change of pace that the company needs and maybe he can’t be, but at least they’re trying something.
Do you like the McIntyre choice? How will it go for him at WrestleMania? Let us know in the comments below.
