It did kind of come out of nowhere. One of the bigger surprises of the year took place this week on Monday Night Raw when Drew McIntyre defeated Randy Orton to become WWE Champion for the second time this year. That is not the kind of thing that you see on WWE television all that often but it is what you saw here. It is a good thing to see in this case, and now we know a bit more about why it happened.
In addition to just having McIntyre as champion again, the win also shakes up the Survivor Series card. Now that McIntyre has the title back, it means he will be facing Universal Champion Roman Reigns in a champion vs. champion showdown at the pay per view. The match was even teased on last week’s SmackDown and now it is taking place. There is a reason for that to be the case.
According to Wrestling Observer Radio, the title match took place for the sake of setting up a babyface vs. heel match between McIntyre vs. Reigns at Survivor Series. In addition, McIntyre vs. Orton has taken place several times now with McIntyre winning the majority of the matches, meaning that Orton’s win was only designed to extend the feud. There is no word on if the feud will continue after Survivor Series.
This could be interesting. Check out what was set up and where it is going:
Opinion: That might not be the best reason to have a title change or to have another pay per view title match, but at least WWE had a nice moment with the title change. McIntyre probably did not need to lose the title in the first place but things are back where they need to be and they are going to be giving us one of the biggest matches on Sunday. Just don’t screw it up.
What do you think of the match? Should McIntyre have dropped the title in the first place? Let us know in the comments below.
