WWE have now reported that former NWA Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Champion Paul Jones has passed away, just days after former WWE Champion Bruno Sammartino too passed away.
Jones was a fixture of the Mid-Atlantic territory throughout the 1960s and ’70s, finding success in multiple places as both a competitor and a manager.
During his career, Jones was a three-time NWA Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Champion and won several tag team Championships with the likes of Ricky Steamboat, Wahoo McDaniel, and Baron von Raschke.
What did he do when his in-ring career ended?
When his in-ring career came to a closure, the iconic performer took on the role of a villainous manager. He formed the Paul Jones’ Army which would include notable names such as Jake “The Snake” Roberts, Abdullah the Butcher and The Powers of Pain.
At age 76, it is safe to say Jones achieved a lot during his life, both inside and out of the wrestling industry. Wrestling Rumors would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Jones’ family, friends and fans as they mourn the loss of another.
