It has been nearly a year since Rey Mysterio has been seen on WWE television. Between bad injuries and messy contractual situations, the two sides have not been on good terms in a long time, with WWE wanting to hold on to him as long as possible for merchandise rights.

At one point, there were plans to bring Mysterio back for a WrestleMania run. But now, it appears he is on his way out.

PWInsider reports Mysterio and WWE are nearing an agreement that would result in his release. There is speculation the release could be done soon, as he reportedly has one in hand, but there are a few issues remaining. He at one point supposedly had a handshake agreement to walk away from the company, but that was redacted.

After he is released, Mysterio is expected to head elsewhere and wrestle. There were rumors he would be headed for AAA, though it seems like Lucha Underground may be a realistic option as well, per the report. Many will recall, Mysterio appeared in a video for AAA last year, promoting he would be coming back to Mexico. Nothing ever materialized from this.

All plans for a return to WWE are seemingly off the table, and it appears the 40-year-old is done in a Vince McMahon-owned ring.

Editor’s Note

A really ugly divorce between the two here, as it should have never gotten to it. I understand the value in merchandise with him, but he was a company guy for a long time, and what does this mean going forward for him?
