Last week, Wrestling Rumors forwarded the report that gave details to the release of former WWE Superstar Alberto Del Rio. Del Rio, who now goes by the name El Patrón, was let go from the company over the summer after laying his hands on a WWE social media employee who supposedly made a racist comment towards him.
In the aforementioned interview, Del Rio noted he was called by a major WWE executive and told he was initially to be suspended, but then was soon after told he was fired. The expectation was he would be hired back, but Del Rio said he would not return if he wasn’t re-hired by the time he hung up the phone. He then went on to say the man who called him alongside other WWE executive are known for making racist jokes.
In a new report from Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, it appears that WWE head honcho who delivered the news to the former superstar is none other than Executive Vice President of Talent Relations Paul Levesque, also known as Triple H.
This is not the first time the company, or Triple H for that matter, has been accused of racism towards Latinos. Del Rio’s former ring announcer Ricardo Rodriguez was often subject to harassment, according to his own claims. Rodriguez once said in an interview:
“I am a little bigger; I am not fat by all means. With my lucha background, I can do flips, front flips, back flips, 450’s, shooting stars, and all that (explicative); Yeah so when I was working with the tryouts and being extras. We would do spots and I would flip around and take bumps like a clothesline and shooting stars. Triple H would call me a bumblebee; I was in Puerto Rico not too long ago and I saw Savio Vega and he used to call him a bumblebee and then I found out he called Super Crazy a bumblebee. He was a referring to an American guy doing flips. He would always make this comment about me being Mexican and Del Rio being Mexican. I and Del Rio use to call ourselves stupid names but when someone else would call us those names we would go whoa hold the (explicative) up.”
For those unaware, the term “Bumblebee” is a reference to a Mexican character from “The Simpsons” who embodies several American stereotypes of Mexicans.
While no lawsuits have been filed, it appears this is just another string in accusations of racism from WWE upper management.
Editor’s Note
Obviously, not good when you have accusations like this popping out of places, especially from reputable names. Need to get on ensuring stuff like that doesn’t exist, especially as a publicly-traded entity.
