Over the past several months, there have been lingering rumors of WWE’s No. 2 show “Friday Night Smackdown” making its return to Thursday nights, this time on Syfy. The company would later come out and deny those rumors, despite them persisting.
The big news comes Friday, as the station sent out a press release claiming its new show, “12 Monkeys,” will be debuting Jan. 16 at 9 p.m. ET. This is a Friday night, and seemingly during the second hour of “Smackdown.” Barring an error in the release, this would indicate the second-longest-running wrestling show in television could be on the move to another night.
The rumors started when the new WWE production trucks featuring the new company logo stated “Smackdown” would be airing Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET. , an occurrence the company stated was a fluke. However, they did note a move to Thursday was “on the table” ultimately.
“Smackdown” debuted in 1999 on Thursdays, and on Friday, will celebrate its 15th anniversary. It moved to Friday nights about 10 years ago, and has remained there ever since.
Editor’s Note
It’s been well-documented Thursdays would be the move in the right direction for the show. Hopefully, it happens.
