Although a torn rotator cuff delayed the debut of Shelton Benjamin on Smackdown after the brand extension draft, it appears WWE still has plans for Benjamin upon his return several months from now. A new pitch from a WWE creative member involves Benjamin forming a faction once he finally debuts.

The idea, according to a report from RingSideNews.com, is to have Benjamin form a Varsity-Club, amateur wrestling-style group. That  group would include other collegiate standouts like Jack Swagger and Dolph Ziggler.

Of course, that idea could easily change in the months ahead, as creative plans are frequently dropped for superstars who aren’t returning soon. Swagger or Ziggler could be busy by the time Benjamin gets back, too.

Still, it’s clear that WWE still wants to incorporate Benjamin back into the fold once he returns, which should bode well for the mid-card. Benjamin’s return could give superstars without much current direction an easy, entertaining feud.

Benjamin’s past with WWE would also help fuel a Varsity-style stable. For WWE fans unfamiliar with his independent work, Benjamin is best known as one-half of the World’s Greatest Tag Team. That team won multiple championships and had a similar slant towards amateur wrestling superiority.
