Thursday afternoon, the wrestling world found out WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes died at the age of 69. Rhodes allegedly took a fall Wednesday morning, and his body quickly shutdown thereafter.
While the cause of death is unknown at this time, it was noted he had been reportedly attempting to drop weight over the past several weeks. Fellow WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross noted to Dusty he needed to get his health in line, but was assured everything was fine.
Now, one of Rhodes’ sons, WWE Superstar Goldust (real name Dustin Runnels), has spoken publicly for the first time following his father’s death. Runnels posted the following to his Facebook page:
“Yesterday my father passed away with his four children, my daughter and his wife of 38 yrs. he was our hero and the greatest father in the world. He is the reason why I am who I am today. He taught me so so many lessons in life. He had 1 thing that he wanted to be and that was he wanted to be forever young. Now he is. Now he is dancing with angels in heaven. He was my mentor, my hero and a dad that I strive to be like. I love you dad. Thank you for all the overwhelmingly amount of love and support. He would have been on cloud 9 with this. Thank you all. Dustin Runnels”
Rhodes’ other son Cody, known as Stardust in WWE, has yet to release comment.
There was an outpour Thursday from all around the wrestling circle, as people took to social media to remember Rhodes. Ric Flair in particular released multiple tributes to his fallen friend, referring to him as his “mentor” in the business.
Editor’s Note
This guy was universally loved by all, and it shows. Very hard still.
