In news that has shocked the WWE Universe and the wrestling world, World Wrestling Entertainment announced the passing of WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes at the age of 69. The company released a statement Thursday afternoon:

WWE is deeply saddened that Virgil Runnels, aka “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes — WWE Hall of Famer, three-time NWA Champion and one of the most captivating and charismatic figures in sports entertainment history — passed away today at the age of 69.

Runnels became a hero to fans around the world thanks to his work ethic, his impassioned interviews and his indomitable spirit. Moreover, Runnels was a dedicated father to WWE Superstars Goldust (Dustin Runnels) and Stardust (Cody Runnels), a caring husband and a creative visionary who helped shape the landscape of WWE long after his in-ring career had ended.

WWE extends its sincerest condolences to Runnels’ family, friends and colleagues.

As noted, Rhodes is the real-life father of Stardust and Goldust, and was last seen on WWE television in the program between the two this past February. The circumstances behind is death are unclear as of this time.

Rhodes was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2007 after a long and prolific career in sports-entertainment. He won dozens of championships over the course of his career, making his biggest impact in the NWA. He will be known nationally for his tenures in WCW and WWE.

Most recently, Rhodes spent most of his time down in NXT, as he oversaw creative at the Florida-based operation. He grew to be a mentor for the NXT personnel, at one time, serving as general manager of the division.
