The WWE Network will air a live special on July 4 from Japan. As previously reported, former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar will be facing Kofi Kingston during the show, but the promoted bout for the special is an NXT Championship match between Kevin Owens and Finn Bálor.
During the June 3 edition of “NXT” on the WWE Network, the special was announced by NXT General Manager William Regal. He promoted that Owens would face Bálor at Sumo Hall in Tokyo on July 4, and the NXT Championship would be on the line, as Bálor became the No. 1 Contender for the title on May 20 at “NXT TakeOver: Unstoppable.”
The special on the WWE Network, which does not have a name yet, will air at 6:30 a.m. EST, which is 8:30 p.m. in Japan where the event will be taking place. With the special beginning at 8:30 p.m. in Japan, while the event itself begins at 7 p.m., WWE may only be planning on airing either just the Owens vs. Bálor bout, or only the last couple of matches on the card.
Lesnar vs. Kingston is slated to take place during the event, as well as United States Champion John Cena and Dolph Ziggler facing off against King Barrett and Kane in the main event. The New Day vs. Tyson Kidd and Cesaro (#BTE) for the WWE Tag Team Championship is also scheduled to take place, as long as Kidd isn’t seriously injured and unable to compete. Chris Jericho is also advertised for a match on the card.
With Owens vs. Bálor being heavily promoted as “the” match to see during the special, it is likely that Owens drops the NXT title to Bálor, as he is now a part of the WWE’s main roster, and will be leaving “NXT” television sometime during the Summer.
Editor’s Note:
Perfect place for Bálor to win the title. Japan is where Fergal Devitt honed his craft. That crowd will eat it up BIG time!
